Vanessa Zajfen is the Farm to School Specialist at San Diego Unified School District, the second largest school district in California. Vanessa works closely with local farmers, the Food Service Department, distribution firms and community stakeholders to develop local food programming and community based solutions to increase access to and the flow of good food to low-income, underserved and all communities within the scope of San Diego Unified School District through Farm to School.
Vanessa has a BA from UC Santa Cruz and an MS in Sustainable Agriculture from Iowa State University. From 2006 to 2010 she worked at the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute developing and managing progressive Farm to Institution models including the nation’s first Farm to WIC-Only program and a Network of Regional Food Hubs. In 2005 she owned and operated, Beyond Organic Produce Company that specialized in sourcing and selling locally grown foods.
