When he started practicing law in Los Angeles in the 1990s, Gregg Kettles became fascinated with street vending. In 2000, he joined the faculty of Mississippi College School of Law, and began writing about the legal aspects of street vending, street food, and other kinds of commerce in public space. After earning tenure at Mississippi College, Kettles returned to Los Angeles in 2008 to serve as a visiting professor at Loyola Law School. He is now Deputy Counsel to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
