Evan Kleiman is a culinary multi-tasker. Chef-owner of Angeli Caffe since 1984, she pioneered California’s market-driven rustic food in an architectural environment. Her little café on Melrose, designed by Morphosis was one of the most widely copied concepts of the 1980s. Evan is a voracious reader and a prolific writer. She co-authored the classic cookbooks Cucina Fresca, Pasta Fresca, and Cucina Rustica. Cucina del Mare and Angeli Caffe: Pizza, Pasta, Panini followed as solo efforts. The center of Evan’s culinary intellectual life is the NPR station KCRW, 89.9 fm in Southern California. She has done over 6,000 interviews since 1998 as the host of Good Food. The show has a very large international listening audience, both on air and through podcast downloads. Her archive of cooking and fresh market videos are available on iTunes and on the Good Food website.
Evan is active in working toward a sustainable food system in California through her work with Roots of Change, which recently facilitated the timely document Declaration for Healthy Food and Agriculture. She was a founder and the leader of the LA Slow Food Convivium for 8 years.
Evan often speaks on issues related to the global food system, sustainability and the links between food and culture, and simply delicious cooking. Evan’s Culinary Tours of Italy are a foodie’s dream.
